Mentawai Island
The Mentawai region can hold surf all year long and is thought to be the most reliable surfing region in the world.
-Peak Season: Between May and October are the months for you if you want to enjoy the barrel of your life and discover what authentic Indonesian surf is like. By this time of the year is when the most experienced surfers from all over the globe go to this place to enjoy the best of it. Also, save to say that it´s when the large swells are more consistent.
-Off Season: From November to April, the area is less crowded and you still score perfect, dreamy waves, more than you could surf in a year in other countries. These months are considered the shoulder months, yet they can still experience everything from large swells to brief enjoyable days.
Weather
Throughout the entire year, the weather is remarkably consistent, with just sporadic tropical storms. Days are hot and muggy, but evenings are a little chilly.
From May to September: This is when we get typical tropical weather, with bright days, little to no wind, and sporadic rain.
With drier weather and light, fluctuating winds, the months of March through April and October through November are ideal for enjoying beautiful sunny days.
Christmas: Although the weather can be a little erratic around this time, you will often experience predominantly bright days and cool nights.
Attractions
The Mentawai is not only for mad surfers, if you would like to enjoy other activities, The Island is also a place with amazing untouched jungle reserves to do trekking tours and visit the indigenous villages lost in time. The Siberut National Park could be a good option for you if you are a nature lover.
However, if trekking is not for you, then there are some amazing snorkeling and diving sites to explore an impressive variety of corals, bottoms, and marine fauna.
Also if you want to experiment the fishing, regular angling or harpoon fishing is very popular in the Mentawais, where you’ll find a lot of fish living on the shallow reefs surrounding the islands.
Another quite nice activity to do in the region could be a traditional Shamanic ceremony. If you’re looking for a bit of local culture, make sure you don’t miss it.
