Mentawai Island

This isolated place in Indonesia was only subject to outside influences at the start of the 20th century. The remote location of these islands means that the Mentawai people have had very little contact with the outside world due to being surrounded by tropical rainforests and immersing themselves in the traditions. The name of these islands came from native people who live a semi-nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle in the coastal and rainforest environments and are also one of the oldest tribes in Indonesia.
The Mentawai Islands archipelago, which consists of 70 islands and islets, covers approximately 150 kilometers of the paradisiacal Western Indonesian Coast and is only a short distance from Western Sumatra.

There are four main islands, Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai, and South Pagai, which make up this archipelago. You will find a quiet and little explored place where you can still find virgin jungles, and white sand beaches with crystal clear and warm waters. Nowadays, and as a remarkable point, the area is known for its perfect waves and to be one of the best spots for surfing around the whole planet.

On a cultural level, these islands are home to the only Mentawai tribe in the world. This tribe is said to have existed for more than 4,000 years. In addition, they preserve many of their traditions (some of them may seem strange to the city and cosmopolitan people), sharpen their teeth, and especially use natural medicines whose preparation is based on their ancestral wisdom and their knowledge of the food and flora of the jungle where they live.
